The Social Democratic Party (SDP) presidential candidate for the 2027 general election, Adewole Adebayo, has pledged to introduce free and mandatory health screening for every Nigerian twice a year if elected president.
Adebayo made the pledge during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja, saying preventive healthcare would be a major part of his proposed administration.
He said the policy would ensure that Nigerians undergo regular medical checks to help identify health challenges early and improve access to treatment.
Adebayo said his proposed healthcare programme was part of a broader plan to improve the welfare of Nigerians and tackle poverty and insecurity, which he described as the country’s two major problems.
“SDP has come to put an end to poverty and insecurity.
"Those are the twin problems that are majorly bedeviling the country,” he said.
The SDP candidate said his government would be guided by the welfare and security provisions in Chapter II of the 1999 Constitution.
He has also proposed a universal healthcare system that would expand access to medical services, regular health screenings and health insurance coverage.
According to his 2027-2031 governance blueprint, titled Farewell to Poverty and Insecurity, government policies and programmes should be designed around measurable improvements in the lives of citizens.
Adebayo said the SDP’s approach to governance would focus on meeting the basic needs of Nigerians and creating conditions for a dignified and productive life.
Adebayo’s latest healthcare pledge comes as he continues to outline his campaign programmes ahead of the 2027 general election.
