Action Democratic Party to INEC: Shift 2027 Polls for Ramadan

The Action Democratic Party (ADP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to review the 2027 general election timetable to avoid clashing with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

In a press statement dated 14th February 2026, the party welcomed INEC’s announcement that it had begun steps to realign the previously released election timetable.

“The Action Democratic Party notes with appreciation the announcement by INEC that it has commenced steps toward the legal and constitutional realignment of the previously announced 2027 General Election timetable,” the statement said.

The ADP said the move showed “institutional responsiveness to public concerns” and praised the commission for its willingness to review its processes within the law.

The party warned that holding major national elections during Ramadan could affect voter turnout and election planning.

“The scheduling of major national elections during the holy month of Ramadan carries significant implications for voter participation, logistical coordination, and national inclusivity,” the statement said.

ADP stressed that Nigeria’s diversity makes religious sensitivity important for democracy.

“In a plural and multi-faith society such as Nigeria, sensitivity to religious observances is not a concession but a democratic necessity,” the party said.

It added that election schedules that respect religious commitments would help strengthen “participation, legitimacy, and national cohesion.”

The party urged INEC to continue consulting stakeholders before releasing a final timetable.

“The Action Democratic Party therefore encourages INEC to continue its consultations with stakeholders and ensure that the final timetable promotes maximum voter turnout, inclusivity, and stability,” the statement said.

The ADP also called on political parties, civil society groups, religious leaders and citizens to support a peaceful and lawful electoral process.

“Nigeria’s democracy is strongest when inclusivity, fairness, and peace remain the guiding principles of our collective actions,” the statement concluded.
