The All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu have asked an Abuja Federal High Court to dismiss a suit filed by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over alleged certificate forgery.
The case is part of the opposition politician’s legal challenge to Tinubu’s eligibility to contest the 2023 presidential election and comes as both men prepare for the 2027 contest.
Atiku’s case alleges that Tinubu presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission and seeks legal consequences over the alleged document.
However, Tinubu and the APC, in their response, urged the court to reject the suit, arguing that the claims were legally defective and could not support the reliefs being sought by the former vice president.
The defendants maintained that the court should not entertain what they described as an attempt to reopen issues relating to Tinubu’s qualification after the 2023 election.
They also argued that Atiku lacked the legal basis to pursue some of the claims and urged the court to dismiss the case.
The legal battle is unfolding ahead of the 2027 presidential election, in which Tinubu is seeking a second term while Atiku is part of an opposition movement seeking to challenge the APC.
The court’s decision could have political implications as the two camps intensify preparations for the next presidential election.
The dispute also revives questions surrounding the controversy over Tinubu’s academic credentials, which featured prominently in legal challenges after the 2023 election.
