The spokesperson of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Felix Morka, has vehemently denied every allegation that the party is trying to push Nigeria toward a one-party state.
Morka, the party’s publicity secretary, told Arise News that the APC is “doing exactly what a political party is expected to do in a democracy.”
Morka said members are free to join or leave any party. He blamed opposition defections on the other parties’ internal problems, not on APC pressure.
“It is their own failure to govern themselves effectively that’s creating the atmosphere,” he said.
The spokesman added that the APC deals with its disagreements through mature internal processes.
Political analysts have raised worries about dominance by a single party in the past.
Morka said history lessons are important but stressed that his party keeps its doors open and follows democratic rules.
He described a political party as “a vehicle and a means to an end” for people who want to compete for power.
The comments came during a morning show interview with party and opposition spokesmen. The APC’s position is that its actions deepen democracy, not threaten it.
