Armed bandits have abducted former Director of Defence Information, retired Maj. Gen. Rabe Abubakar and his wife after their vehicle was attacked along a highway in Katsina State.
The couple was reportedly travelling through Matazu Local Government Area on Saturday when heavily armed gunmen intercepted their vehicle and took them to an unknown location. The attack has sparked fresh concerns about insecurity across parts of Nigeria’s North-West region, where kidnappings and highway ambushes remain common.
A security source described the incident as “a daring attack along a major route in the state,” adding that the gunmen stopped the vehicle before abducting the retired military officer and his wife. According to the source, “the attackers intercepted the couple’s vehicle and whisked them away to an unknown destination.”
The driver escaped during the attack despite suffering a gunshot wound.
A source familiar with the incident said that the driver escaped with gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. Reports said the vehicle, a red Peugeot 504 saloon car, was later recovered by security personnel.
Military and security agencies have reportedly begun efforts to rescue the victims.
A senior military source told journalists, “We have received the sad news of his abduction and that of his wife, and we will act accordingly to ensure he and his wife are rescued.”
Authorities had not issued an official statement as of press time.
The incident is expected to intensify calls for stronger security measures across Katsina State and other parts of the North-West.
