CAF and FIFA Condemn 'Unacceptable' Clashes After Morocco-Senegal AFCON Final

The Confédération Africaine de Football (CAF) has launched an investigation into "unacceptable behaviour" by players and officials following the final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

This follows a statement by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, who condemned “some Senegal players” for the “unacceptable scenes” which overshadowed their victory in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final when they walked off the pitch in protest at a penalty awarded to Morocco.

“We strongly condemn the behaviour of some ‘supporters’ as well as some Senegalese players and technical staff members,” Infantino's statement said.

“It is unacceptable to leave the field of play in this manner, and equally, violence cannot be tolerated in our sport; it is simply not right.”

The tournament ended on Sunday night in Rabat with Morocco defeating Senegal to become the champions of Africa.

However, the celebration was cut short for a little while when a heated argument broke out on the pitch.

According to witnesses, several players and team staff members began pushing and shouting at each other shortly after the game ended.

In a strong statement released on Monday, CAF leaders expressed their disappointment.

They noted that while football is a passionate game, players must remain professional and respect their opponents.

"The image of African football must be protected," the statement read. CAF emphasised that the AFCON final is watched by millions of people around the world, including children who look up to these players as role models.

The disciplinary committee of CAF is currently reviewing video footage of the incident.

They are looking to identify specific players and officials who started the fight.

Those found guilty could face heavy fines or long bans from playing in international matches.
