Desmond Elliot Makes U-turn, Denies Withdrawing from APC Primary

In a rapidly evolving political drama, the incumbent Lagos State House of Assembly member representing Surulere I, Hon. Desmond Elliot, has pushed back against the reports that he withdrew from the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary to pick the party’s candidate for the 2027 General Election.

A video circulated widely on Wednesday, showing Elliot addressing supporters and agents at a polling venue.

In it, he cited intimidation, harassment, and the exclusion of his supporters from voting areas, particularly in certain wards, before stating he was withdrawing and wishing others "good luck."

“In all zones, they've been intimidating and stopping us. I want to officially announce my withdrawal from this particular race,” Elliot said.

“This is my ward. If you go outside, those are my people, and they've not been allowed.

“So, I am officially announcing my withdrawal from this race. Goodluck. Thank you.”

This was quickly interpreted as an official exit from the race, with headlines declaring his withdrawal over alleged voter suppression and political pressure.

However, posts on Elliot's verified X account present a sharply different narrative.

“My decision was one of statesmanship and restraint—not a concession, withdrawal, or surrender of my candidacy,” the lawmaker and actor wrote on the microblogging site.

“It is therefore misleading and inaccurate for anyone to interpret or portray my remarks as stepping down from the race.”

In statements issued shortly after the video gained traction, the lawmaker and his supporters clarified that his actions were not a formal concession or withdrawal but a tactical move for peace.

In a detailed release signed by Concerned Supporters and Stakeholders, the camp explained that what Elliott communicated was his “deep concern over the deliberate exclusion and intimidation of his supporters.”

The lawmaker himself posted a follow-up video clarifying that he remains in the race and committed to his supporters' mandate.

He urged the public to "disregard false narratives" and focus on ensuring transparency and fairness in the primary process.
