FEC Approves Six Major Road Projects to Improve Transport Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved six major road projects aimed at improving transportation and boosting economic activities across the country.

The approvals were announced after a council meeting chaired by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Minister of Works David Umahi briefed journalists after the meeting and said the projects would help improve important highways linking many states.

According to Umahi, the government approved the reconstruction of several key roads, including the Ibadan–Ife–Ilesa Road, a 103-kilometre dual carriageway in the South-West valued at about ₦427 billion.

The project had earlier been awarded but showed little progress, leading the government to review and re-award the contract.

Another major project is the reconstruction of a section of the Abuja–Lokoja highway, an important road that links the Federal Capital Territory to many northern and southern states. The project is estimated to cost about ₦146 billion.

The council also approved the redesign of the Carter Bridge in Lagos as part of broader plans to improve road infrastructure and traffic flow in the country’s commercial hub.

Umahi said the projects are part of the federal government’s plan to strengthen major transport routes that support trade and movement of people across Nigeria.

He added that better roads would help reduce travel time, lower transportation costs and support economic growth.

The minister also said the government plans to commission at least four road projects in each of Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones by May 15 as part of efforts to speed up infrastructure development.
