FERMA Proposes ₦229.999bn Road Maintenance Budget to Lawmakers

The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) has proposed a ₦229.999 billion budget for road maintenance in 2026 and is seeking approval from the National Assembly, agency officials said on Wednesday.

In a 2026 budget presentation to lawmakers, FERMA said it needs increased funding to repair and maintain federal roads across Nigeria, many of which have deteriorated due to heavy traffic and poor drainage.

The proposed allocation represents a major boost from previous years’ maintenance budgets.

FERMA Director-General Dr Kabir Abdullahi Isa told the Senate Committee on Works that the budget is essential to reduce road failures and improve travel safety.

“We require the sum of ₦229,999,000,000 for road maintenance,” he said, noting that this figure reflects rising costs of materials and equipment.

He explained that the agency’s 2026 plans include strengthening pavement structures, improving road shoulders and embankments, and rehabilitating asphalt surfaces.

He said poor roads increase vehicle operating costs and lead to more frequent accidents. “Maintaining our federal roads is critical to socio-economic development,” Isa said.

FERMA also asked lawmakers to help ensure the smooth release of funds.

“Sustainable funding and predictable release will enable us to carry out maintenance works efficiently,” he told committee members.

Senators on the committee acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria’s road networks and promised to review the proposal.

“Road infrastructure is vital for commerce and connectivity,” said Senate Committee Chairman Sen. Saidu Alkali.

He noted that potholes and degraded surfaces have affected transport and urged FERMA to improve monitoring.

FERMA’s budget now awaits consideration and potential adjustments by the National Assembly before being passed into the 2026 appropriation law.
