An early morning fire swept through Sabo Market in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Tuesday, destroying at least 17 shops before emergency responders brought the blaze under control.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), in a statement, said the fire broke out in the market in the early hours of the day, triggering a rapid response from emergency agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.
LASEMA Permanent Secretary Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said no lives were lost in the incident.
"The fire affected 17 lock-up shops," he said.
He added, "There was no record of injury or loss of life."
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, firefighters successfully stopped the flames from spreading to other parts of the busy market.
"The fire has been extinguished, and dampening down has been concluded to prevent a secondary outbreak," he said.
"The immediate cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, and investigations are ongoing."
Officials said the affected area was secured after the operation, while traders began assessing the extent of their losses.
The incident is the latest in a series of market fires recorded in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria in recent months, raising renewed concerns about fire safety in major commercial centres. Emergency officials have repeatedly urged traders to switch off electrical appliances after business hours, avoid unsafe electrical connections and keep combustible materials away from heat sources.
Authorities said a full assessment of the damage would continue as investigators work to determine the cause of the fire.
