Fountain School Jikwoyi Abuja has advanced to the semi-finals of the Season Nine I Beg To Differ National Debate Competition after defeating Government Science Secondary School, Tungamaji, Abuja, in a closely contested quarterfinal debate on the motion, “Identity Is Chosen Rather Than Inherited.”
The Fountain School team, arguing for the proposition, maintained that while people inherit their family background, culture, language, nationality and other circumstances of birth, individuals ultimately have the power to shape their identities through personal choices, values and experiences.
The team argued that inheritance provides the starting point of a person's story but does not determine how that story ends.
It cited examples of people who have risen beyond their circumstances, changed their religious beliefs, adopted new cultures, moved across countries and developed identities different from what they inherited.
The Fountain School team also argued that people may inherit a family name and background but must develop their own character, reputation, values and beliefs through personal decisions.
Government Science Secondary School, arguing against the motion, maintained that identity is fundamentally rooted in what people inherit from birth.
The team argued that individuals do not choose their biological characteristics, ancestry, nationality, family names, tribes or cultural backgrounds, stressing that these elements exist before a person is capable of making conscious choices.
Using the analogy of a plant, the opposition argued that inheritance provides the soil in which a person is planted, while personal choices may determine how the individual grows but cannot change the foundation from which that growth began.
During the rebuttal round, Government Science Secondary School challenged the proposition's argument that changing one's name, culture or beliefs amounts to choosing a new identity.
The team maintained that although people can change certain aspects of their lives, such changes do not erase their ancestry, biological background or inherited identity.
In response, Fountain School argued that the opposition had confused a person's origin with identity, stressing that inheriting a particular background does not necessarily determine who an individual eventually becomes.
The team pointed to personal transformation, religious conversion, changes in nationality and cultural adaptation as evidence that individuals can reshape their identities through their choices and experiences.
In their closing arguments, the proposition maintained that accepting the opposition's position would leave little room for personal growth, transformation and individual responsibility.
The opposition, however, insisted that choice operates on a foundation that has already been provided through inheritance, arguing that people can make decisions about their lives without changing the fundamental identity they received at birth.
The adjudicators ultimately gave Fountain School the advantage across the three rounds.
Fountain School got a combined score of 71.5 points, while Government Science Secondary scored 66 points.
Fountain School therefore entered the audience vote with a 5.5-point advantage.
The audience vote also went in Fountain School's favour, with the school recording 56 percent, compared with 46 percent for Government Science Secondary School.
Fountain School was subsequently declared the winner by unanimous decision and secured its place in the Season 9 semi-finals.
For Government Science Secondary School, the quarterfinal defeat brought its championship journey to an end, although the organisers commended the team for its performance and its progress to the final eight.
The school was also awarded 250,000 naira for reaching the quarterfinal stage.
The competition now moves into the semi-final stage, with Fountain School set to face the winner of the next quarterfinal between Square College and Silverbird International School.
