Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has expressed frustration over delays in the redevelopment of police barracks in Lagos, saying officers and their families have waited long enough for decent accommodation.
Disu spoke during an inspection of about 21 police barracks and related facilities across the state.
The projects include demolition, reconstruction and rehabilitation works.
“I am not so happy with the stage they are now.
"Our officers are eager.
"They have been patient enough for a lot of times,” Disu said.
He said decent accommodation was important to police welfare and effective service, noting that officers who risk their lives to protect Nigerians deserved comfortable homes.
Disu said some officers could begin moving into completed accommodation between December and January, although he acknowledged that some projects had been delayed.
About 600 buildings in the barracks have already been refurbished, while a headcount of officers living in police quarters has been completed to determine housing needs.
At Falomo, Disu ordered steps to reclaim the former barracks site from unauthorized occupants.
He also disclosed plans to redesign and upgrade the Police Hospital there.
The IGP said officers affected by redevelopment would not be abandoned.
He promised accommodation allowances and said construction could be done in phases to allow some personnel to remain on-site.
Lagos State is partnering with the police and private developers under the LagosHOMS housing framework.
State officials said at least 1,000 housing units are targeted for completion by February 2027.
Projects include Ije, Falomo, MOPOL 20, Highway, K9, Bar Beach, Iponri and Queen’s Barracks.
