IGP Disu Forms Committee For State Police Implementation

Nigeria’s newly installed Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tunji Disu, has inaugurated a new committee to help roll out the planned State Police system and set out his vision for policing in the country.

Disu made the announcement on Wednesday in Abuja during his first official meeting with senior officers after he was confirmed as the 23rd indigenous IGP of the Nigeria Police Force.

The eight-member committee will “oversee the implementation of the state police and the unveiling of the policing vision,” according to officials.

Disu told the top police leadership that leadership “is not about position but responsibility.”

He said the police must practise real professionalism and accountability, not just talk about them.

He stressed that officers should show respect for human rights and treat “every Nigerian… with dignity, fairness and justice, regardless of status or background.”

The IGP also announced plans to strengthen internal police oversight.

He said the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad would be empowered to work independently to investigate problems within the force.

Disu explained that decentralising police functions — allowing different levels of government to take part in security — will help improve policing across the country.

He named Professor Olu Ogunsakin to lead the state police implementation committee.

The inauguration comes after the Nigeria Police Council unanimously ratified Disu’s appointment, clearing the way for his confirmation by the Senate following a formal ceremony.

The move is part of broader plans by the government and police leadership to reform Nigeria’s security system and explore a more localised policing model under the State Police framework.
