Ikeja Electric Pledges Cooperation After FCCPC Action to Seal HQ Over Consumer Rights Violations

A spokesman for the Ikeja Electric Distribution Company (IKEDC) said that the company is engaging stakeholders and taking steps to attend to the affected customers which led to the sealing of their HQ in Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.

Nigeria’s consumer watchdog, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), on Thursday sealed the headquarters of Ikeja Electric, saying the power company ignored orders to fix consumer-rights breaches.

The action followed a complaint that 19 homes were without power for about 30 months even though the owner paid for electricity and met other obligations.

The commission said it acted after repeated talks with the electricity firm and after the firm failed to follow a Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) directive.

FCCPC officials described the sealing as a last resort after several chances for voluntary compliance.

The commission said the seal will stay until Ikeja Electric proves it has met all the orders.

Ikeja Electric confirmed the office was sealed and said it is working with regulators to resolve the matter.

Both regulators and the power company said they want a quick resolution so services can return to normal for customers.
