Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has declared his intention to contest Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election on the platform of the African Action Congress.
Sowore made the announcement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Friday, insisting that his ambition is driven by a desire to offer Nigerians an alternative to the country’s mainstream political establishment.
“I am running to win,” Sowore said when asked about his 2027 ambition.
He added, “All the political parties are equal, and the better candidates should be able to win elections in this country, people with ideas.”
The former AAC presidential candidate said conditions in the country had worsened since the last election cycle.
“It’s different because these are different times also.
"Times are harder.
"Nigeria is in bigger trouble,” he said.
Sowore also criticised President Bola Tinubu and other leading opposition figures, arguing that the current political class was responsible for Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
“All the ideas of the people you mentioned brought Nigeria into this cycle of poverty, insecurity, pain, sorrow, and tears,” he said. “Do you want Nigeria to continue to get these same people elected or selected?”
The activist further disclosed that the AAC would conduct its presidential primary next week but declined to confirm whether he would emerge as the party’s sole candidate.
Speaking on ongoing electoral developments, Sowore referenced a recent Federal High Court judgment that voided aspects of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.
“We haven’t finally submitted, and that’s what this court judgment says,” he said while discussing the AAC’s membership registration process.
The 2027 race is expected to attract several major contenders, including President Tinubu, the NDC's Peter Obi and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who recently announced his own presidential ambition.
