INEC Rejects Gombe’s Claim, Deletes David Mark’s Name Amid ADC Leadership Crisis

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has rejected the claim of Nafiu Bala Gombe as Acting National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), while also deleting the name of former Senate President David Mark from its official records.

INEC said its decision follows a court order, as the leadership crisis within the party continues to deepen ahead of the 2027 elections.

The commission stated that it would not recognise Gombe’s position, insisting that due process must be followed in determining the party’s authentic leadership.

It also stated that it would remove Mark’s name from its portal, signalling a neutral stance as the legal battle continues.

The commission said the move was based on ongoing litigation over the ADC’s leadership structure, with multiple factions laying claim to control of the party.

The dispute dates back to 2025, when David Mark emerged as a key figure in the party following coalition talks involving opposition leaders.

However, his leadership has been challenged in court by Gombe and other party members, who argue that the process was not lawful.

Earlier rulings had refused to stop Mark’s leadership activities but directed parties to return to court for proper hearing.

The ADC has become a major platform for opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections, increasing the stakes in the leadership tussle.

With the commission stepping back from recognising any faction, attention now shifts to the judiciary, whose ruling will determine the legitimate leadership of the party and its role in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
