Inferno Destroys Shops and Goods Worth Millions in Ajegunle, Lagos

Officials reported that a fire tore through a one-storey shopping complex and nearby stores on Amore Street in Ajegunle Boundary, destroying goods said to be worth millions of naira.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) said preliminary investigations show the blaze began after a power surge when electricity supply was restored.

“Fortunately there was no loss of lives, nor casualties involved as a result of the incident,” the agency added.

Firefighters and LASEMA crews worked to put out the flames.

By midday responders found the building partially compromised and warned it needs immediate structural assessment before anyone can re-enter.

“The entire one-storey shopping complex and surrounding shops were completely razed by the fire. All goods and properties worth millions of naira stored therein were totally destroyed by the fire,” the statement said.

Traders and shoppers gathered near the scene, many in shock as they counted losses.

Eyewitness video shared on social media showed thick smoke and crews battling the blaze while traders tried to salvage items.

Officials urged commercial property owners to review fire safety measures and storage protocols to prevent similar disasters.

The incident adds to a string of recent Lagos fires that have damaged markets and commercial buildings, including a January blaze at Computer Village and other market fires across the state.

Authorities said investigations are ongoing and asked affected traders to document losses for possible assistance.

LASEMA also reminded owners to switch off generators when refuelling and keep emergency exits clear.
