A coroner’s court in Lagos has set 14th April 2026, to begin a formal inquiry into the death of 21-month-old Nkanu Nnamdi Esege, the son of renowned Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and her husband, Dr. Ivara Esege.
The decision was made at the Yaba Magistrate Court on Wednesday.
Nkanu died on 7th January 2026, after being treated at Atlantis Hospital and undergoing medical procedures at Euracare Multi-Specialist Hospital in Lagos.
The child had initially been admitted for a worsening illness and was later referred for further tests and procedures before medical evacuation to the United States was planned.
Nkanu’s parents have alleged medical negligence and professional misconduct in connection with his death, saying the death was “unnatural” and occurred during medical care.
At a preliminary hearing, Magistrate Atinuke Adetunji adjourned the case until 14th April so that lawyers and parties involved can prepare for the full inquest.
She said the main aim of the hearing will be to “determine the cause of death.”
Counsel for the family told the court they intend to call five independent medical experts, including specialists in anaesthesia, paediatric anaesthesia, radiology and intensive care.
The child’s father, who is also a medical doctor, is also expected to give evidence.
Lawyers for the hospitals involved appeared in court, and the magistrate directed all parties to file their witness statements before the April date.
An autopsy report is expected to be important in helping the court understand the medical issues related to Nkanu’s death.
The inquest will formally begin on 14th April 2026, when the court will hear evidence from both the family and the hospitals involved.
