Iran Executes Man Accused of Spying for Israel

The Iranian government has executed a man on charges of spying for Israel’s intelligence agency, Mossad.

The execution took place on Wednesday morning after the country’s highest court confirmed his death sentence.

The man, identified as Shahrokh Mostafaei, was accused of "espionage for the Zionist regime."

According to the Iranian judiciary, Mostafaei was involved in a plan to carry out a "terrorist operation" within the country.

Authorities claim he was part of a group that was being directed by foreign agents.

In an official statement, the Iranian judiciary’s Mizan news agency said: "The death sentence for Shahrokh Mostafaei, who was convicted of working with the Mossad intelligence service, was carried out this morning."

The statement further explained the charges, noting: "The convict had planned to carry out a terrorist operation in the country under the guidance of Mossad officers."

Iran and Israel have been "shadow enemies" for many years.

Iran frequently accuses Israel of carrying out secret attacks on its nuclear scientists and military buildings.

In response, Iran often arrests people it claims are working as secret agents for Israel.

Human rights groups around the world have often criticised Iran for its high number of executions.

They argue that many people do not get a fair trial. However, the Iranian government insists that it is only following its laws to protect national security.

This execution is the latest in a series of similar cases as tensions between the two countries remain very high across the Middle East.
