Jonathan Proposes Single Model for Election Cases to Speed Up Justice

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called for a single, unified system to handle election-related court cases in Nigeria, warning that the current process is too slow and confusing.

Jonathan made the suggestion while speaking on the need to improve Nigeria’s electoral system and strengthen democracy at the 70th birthday celebration of former Ogun State governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel.

He said multiple court cases at different levels often delay justice and create uncertainty after elections.

According to him, having one clear model for handling election disputes would help reduce contradictions in court rulings and ensure faster decisions.

He stressed that election matters should be treated as urgent, so winners can focus on governance without long legal battles.

Jonathan also urged political actors to respect the judiciary and avoid actions that could weaken public trust in elections.

He noted that too many legal disputes after elections can affect stability and confidence in the democratic process.

Election litigation has remained a major issue in Nigeria, with cases sometimes lasting months or even years after results are announced.

Experts say reforms in the legal system could help reduce delays and improve transparency in resolving electoral disputes.

Jonathan’s proposal comes as discussions grow ahead of future elections, including the 2027 general polls, with calls for reforms to make the process more efficient and credible.
