Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway will face traffic restrictions as the Federal Government begins urgent repairs on the Kara Bridge from 8th of September, 2026.
The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA) will carry out the work on worn-out expansion joints on the bridge, with the repairs expected to last 14 days.
The bridge is scheduled to fully reopen 21st September.
The Acting Federal Controller of Works in Ogun state, Richard Adeleye, said the repairs had become necessary because years of heavy use had damaged the expansion joints.
“Expansion joints allow bridge structures to accommodate movement caused by temperature fluctuations,” Adeleye said.
“Failing to replace these worn-out joints risks cracking, buckling, and other serious structural failures,” he said.
Adeleye said the work had been postponed several times because of the heavy traffic on the route.
He said further delays could put the bridge at greater risk.
The repairs will be carried out in phases.
One half of the carriageway will be worked on first, while traffic is moved to a controlled single lane on the other side.
Work will then shift to the remaining half.
Traffic officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps and other agencies will be deployed to manage movement and reduce congestion.
Adeleye said the damaged joint had also contributed to accidents.
“It is better done now because it has been causing a lot of accidents,” he said.
He advised motorists heading toward Ibadan to consider the Ogijo-Ikorodu corridor and routes around Sango and Abeokuta.
Motorists who remain on the expressway will still be allowed through the construction area under controlled traffic conditions.
