Lagos Government Strengthens First Responders for Faster Emergency Response

The Lagos State Government is working to improve how quickly emergency teams respond to incidents across the state.

Officials say better coordination, new programmes and stronger partnerships are helping first responders act faster when people need help.

One new effort is the Coastal Community First Responder Programme, launched by the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA) with the Centre for Rural Development (CERUD).

The programme trains community volunteers to help during emergencies on Lagos waterways, especially in places that are hard to reach by regular teams.

Trained volunteers will work closely with LASWA to share information and support rescue operations.

In addition, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund (LSSTF) and the Nigeria Police Airwing Command have begun using aerial patrols — surveillance flights to watch over the city from the sky.

The patrols are designed to help detect trouble quickly and support police and other agencies in responding to incidents in real time.

Officials said the flights can cover large areas in minutes and act as a deterrent to crime.

Lagos also continues to strengthen its Command and Control Centre, the central hub that connects emergency calls with police, fire services, ambulance teams and other responders.

The centre uses technology to monitor emergencies and send help faster.

Government officials say expanding community training and improving communication systems will help ensure that first responders can reach emergencies quickly and save lives across Africa’s most populated city.
