A group known as Lagos State Prominent Indigenes has called on the ruling All Progressives Congress to reserve the state’s governorship position for native Lagosians in the 2027 election.
In a communiqué issued after a technical committee meeting on Wednesday, the group said the move is necessary “in the interest of fairness, justice and sense of belonging.”
The group also pledged support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying it had resolved “to fully support the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu… for a second term in office.”
According to the statement signed by Convener Chief (Dr.) Adesunbo Onitiri, the group believes that the offices of governor, deputy governor and speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2027 should all be occupied by indigenes of the state.
It said the position is “anchored on the need to ensure equity, identity preservation, and deeper stakeholder alignment in the governance of Lagos State.”
The group outlined criteria for aspirants, stating they “must be bonafide indigenes of Lagos State, with verifiable ancestral roots,” possess strong academic and professional qualifications, and have “demonstrable experience in governance, leadership, or enterprise.”
It added that candidates should have “a proven record of integrity,” sound character and “verifiable achievements within Lagos State and/or beyond.”
The group said it plans to engage with qualified aspirants to identify those “best suited to steward the collective future of Lagos State.”
Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, has long attracted people from across the country, making questions of indigene rights and political representation a sensitive issue ahead of major elections.
