Lagos Orders Indefinite Closure of Eko Bridge for Emergency Repairs

The Lagos State government has announced the indefinite closure of the outbound section of Eko Bridge for emergency safety investigations and structural repairs.

The closure will begin on Tuesday, 12 May, affecting motorists travelling from the mainland to Lagos Island.

Authorities said the inward carriageway into the mainland will remain open to traffic.

Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, said the decision followed growing concerns over the condition of parts of the bridge.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” Osiyemi said in a statement.

Motorists coming from Apongbon and Ijora Olopa have been advised to use the Third Mainland Bridge and other alternative routes during the repair period.

Earlier this week, the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, disclosed that five supporting piles beneath a section of the bridge had failed, making the structure unsafe for regular traffic.

He said the federal government decided to shut one carriageway to prevent possible danger to commuters.

“By the midnight of this coming Sunday, that full carriageway must be closed.

"The other carriageway will be working,” Umahi said.

The minister added, “We will not allow people to endanger their lives. We are a responsible administration.”

According to the Federal Ministry of Works, engineers will carry out piling, reinforcement and replacement of damaged sections of the bridge.

Divers and structural experts are also expected to conduct further investigations before final repairs begin.
