Lagos State Announces Four-Week Partial Closure of Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for Repairs

The Lagos State Government has announced a four-week partial closure of the busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to allow the Federal Ministry of Works to repair damaged sections of the road, officials said.

In a statement posted on the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation’s X account, Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi said the closure will begin Wednesday, 11th February, and last until 11th March, 2026.

The repairs will focus on the stretch from U-Turn Bus Stop to Sango Tollgate on both inbound and outbound lanes.

Osiyemi explained that the project will run in two phases to reduce traffic disruption.

The first phase, from 11 February to 4 March, will affect traffic heading toward Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate.

“During this phase, traffic from Lagos/Abule-Egba inward Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate will be diverted to one half of the carriageway,” the statement said.

He said work will be done on one lane at a time, and once a section is completed, traffic will be moved onto it while repairs continue on the other half.

Phase Two, running 4 - 11 March, will affect traffic going toward Lagos/Abule-Egba.

“Traffic from Abeokuta/Sango Tollgate inward Lagos/Abule-Egba will be diverted through one half of the road,” the statement added.

Mr. Osiyemi assured motorists that adequate traffic management measures will be in place throughout the four weeks and urged road users to plan journeys carefully, obey traffic signs and cooperate with officials.

The expressway is one of the country’s busiest highways and has been under ongoing rehabilitation to improve road safety and travel time.
