The Lagos State Government will begin reconstruction and improvement works on the Turnbull and Parkview intersections along Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, on September 14.
The six-month project is aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving the movement of vehicles around the busy Ikoyi corridor.
Lagos Commissioner for Transportation Oluwaseun Osiyemi announced the plan during a stakeholders’ meeting in Banana Island Estate, Ikoyi.
He urged residents, businesses and estate associations to cooperate with the government to ensure the project is completed on time.
Osiyemi said the government had considered different ways of dealing with the traffic problem before settling on the junction improvement project.
“The project has been under discussion for about eight or nine months, and government has worked with relevant stakeholders to secure funding,” he said.
He said construction would be carefully planned to protect electricity, water and fiber-optic infrastructure in the area.
“It is very wrong to start a project without proper communication being disseminated,” Osiyemi said, stressing the need to keep residents informed.
The commissioner also said work would be adjusted around traffic patterns to reduce disruption.
Construction would be slowed or stopped during peak periods and increased during off-peak hours.
“We are going to work in conjunction with the people, the residents,” he said.
Engineer Folorunsho Owolabi of Concept Limited, the contractor handling the project, said the physical construction could be completed within three months, although the government has set a six-month timeline.
Parkview Residents Association Chairman Ronke Shokefun welcomed the project, saying it could address bottlenecks caused by the existing road layout.
