LASTMA to Use Modern Tech for Faster Traffic Response in 2026

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has announced that it will adopt a new "tech-driven" system to manage road accidents and traffic jams starting in 2026.

The agency plans to move away from old-fashioned methods and use modern technology to monitor the city’s busy roads.

This plan was revealed by the General Manager of LASTMA during a recent strategy meeting.

Instead of relying only on officers calling each other on radios, LASTMA will use a network of smart cameras and sensors placed at major junctions across Lagos.

These tools will automatically detect when an accident happens or when traffic is moving too slowly, and then send an instant alert to a central control room.

This allows emergency teams, such as ambulances or tow trucks, to be sent to the scene much faster than before.

LASTMA officials believe that using data and digital tools will help clear these blocks quickly.

"We want to reduce the time it takes for our officers to respond to incidents," the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Transportation, Mr Sola Giwa, said. "In 2026, we are looking at a system where every second counts to keep Lagos moving."
