The Lagos Waste Management Authority has urged Lagos residents to reduce waste and separate recyclable materials from general refuse as disposal facilities across the state come under increasing pressure during the rainy season.
LAWMA said persistent rainfall and difficult terrain conditions were affecting operations at some landfill and disposal sites, slowing truck movement and waste evacuation across parts of Lagos.
The agency’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the situation had placed “considerable strain on disposal infrastructure” and affected operational efficiency at several facilities.
According to him, LAWMA and other stakeholders are already working on measures to improve access to disposal sites and reduce pressure on waste facilities during the rainy season.
Gbadegesin called on residents to support the agency by embracing waste sorting, proper bagging of refuse and recycling practices.
“We urge residents to support ongoing interventions by reducing waste generation, properly bagging waste, and adopting waste-sorting practices that encourage recycling and resource recovery,” he said.
The LAWMA boss also warned against illegal dumping of refuse on roads, medians and drainage channels, saying such actions worsen flooding and environmental problems in the state.
“It is a sad commentary that despite persistent public awareness, warnings and actual enforcements, some residents still refuse to patronise assigned PSP operators,” the agency said in an earlier statement.
LAWMA said Lagos generates between 13,000 and 15,000 tonnes of waste daily, creating heavy pressure on waste collection and disposal systems.
The agency added that it was expanding recycling programmes and working with local councils and private operators to improve waste management across the state.
LAWMA has also encouraged residents to see waste as a resource that can create jobs and economic value through recycling and recovery programmes.
Officials advised Lagosians to patronise licensed Private Sector Participation operators and maintain cleaner surroundings to reduce environmental and health risks during the rainy season.
