The Makinde/Daura Presidential Campaign Organisation has accused President Bola Tinubu’s administration of failing to adequately protect Nigerians following the abduction of 19 prospective National Youth Service Corps members in Imo State.
The campaign group said the abduction on 1st October showed that terrorists, bandits and kidnappers were becoming bolder because of what it described as the government’s weak response to insecurity.
In a statement by its Director of Strategic Communications, Richard Ihediwa, the group described the incident as “yet another sad commentary on the failure of the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC) administration to secure our citizens.”
The prospective corps members were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to orientation camps in the South-East and South-South when gunmen attacked their buses along the Owerri-Onitsha road in Imo State.
The campaign said it was “profoundly saddening and heartbreaking” that parents could spend years educating their children only for them to be exposed to danger while travelling for compulsory national service.
It also accused the administration of allowing Nigeria to “degenerate into a failed state,” claiming that about 600,000 Nigerians had been killed by bandits and terrorists in three years.
The campaign urged the government to take immediate action to secure the release of the abducted youths.
Meanwhile, Imo State police said they had located the suspected kidnappers’ camp but were yet to enter because intelligence indicated that the area may have been planted with improvised explosive devices.
Police Commissioner Audu Bosso said drones were deployed after security operatives tracked the abductors into the bush.
