The Nigerian Consulate General in Johannesburg has called for investigations into the deaths of three more Nigerians in separate incidents in South Africa between 18th and 21st September amid growing concerns over xenophobic violence.
In a statement issued on Monday, Consul General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche identified the victims as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka.
Igwemadu reportedly died on 18th September in Bloemfontein while attempting to escape alleged police harassment.
Olatunde, a security guard at a nightclub in Pretoria, was shot on 20th September following an argument with a customer over a cup belonging to the establishment.
The consulate said the attacker fled the scene.
“Upon noticing the grievous harm done, the shooter immediately fled the scene.”
Olatunde died in hospital the following morning.
Nnaemeka reportedly died on 21st September after an alleged encounter with South African politician Xolani Khumalo and members of his Sizok’thola team in Ekurhuleni.
The consulate alleged that Nnaemeka was assaulted before attempting to escape.
He later collapsed and was pronounced dead at a hospital.
Okey-Uche described the incidents as deeply troubling.
“The recent deaths of the three (3) Nigerians, coming in quick succession, also raises questions about what seems to be a pattern of targeting Nigerians in South Africa.”
Earlier in September, two Nigerians were reported killed in separate incidents, prompting Nigeria to demand investigations and consider further diplomatic measures.
The consulate urged South African authorities to investigate the latest deaths and bring anyone found responsible to justice.
It also appealed to Nigerians to remain calm, law-abiding and security-conscious.
