Nigeria to Withdraw Passports From Citizens Who Renounce Nationality

Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service to withdraw and deactivate passports issued to individuals who have renounced their Nigerian citizenship.

The directive applies to persons whose renunciation requests have been formally approved by President Bola Tinubu.

Tunji-Ojo said the move is in line with provisions of Section 29 of the 1999 Constitution, which states that individuals who renounce their citizenship cease to be Nigerians upon registration of the declaration.

He added that such individuals are no longer entitled to hold Nigerian sovereign documents, including passports.

The minister said the directive forms part of ongoing passport and visa reforms aimed at strengthening border security, preventing identity fraud and preserving the integrity of Nigerian citizenship.

He said the government will continue to improve systems that support legitimate travel while restricting access to ineligible persons.
