Nigeria Warned of Fire Risks, Health Dangers as Heatwave Intensifies

Nigeria’s disaster management agency has warned that the ongoing heatwave across the country could increase the risk of fire outbreaks and serious health problems.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) issued the warning as temperatures continue to rise in many parts of the country.

In a public advisory, the agency cautioned that the extreme heat could lead to more accidents and health emergencies if people do not take precautions.

NEMA said the current weather conditions could increase the chances of fire incidents, especially during the dry season when vegetation and household materials become easier to ignite.

The agency warned that “fire outbreaks tend to increase during the dry season due to the hot and dry weather conditions.”

It urged Nigerians to be careful when using electrical appliances, cooking equipment and open flames.

According to the agency, the heatwave also poses serious health risks.

Prolonged exposure to high temperatures can cause dehydration, fatigue and other heat-related illnesses.

Experts say extreme heat can also worsen respiratory and heart conditions, especially among children and the elderly.

NEMA advised Nigerians to drink enough water, avoid staying under the sun for long periods and wear light clothing to reduce heat stress.

The agency also encouraged residents to check on vulnerable people such as the elderly, children and those with existing health conditions.

Heatwaves have become more common in Nigeria in recent years, with scientists linking the rising temperatures to climate change and rapid urban development.

Weather experts say northern states often experience the highest temperatures, sometimes exceeding 40 degrees Celsius during the peak dry season.

NEMA said the public must take safety warnings seriously to reduce the risk of fire disasters and protect their health during the ongoing heatwave.
