NIMC Cracks Down on Illegal NIN Centres, Arrests Suspects

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has arrested several suspects and seized equipment during raids on illegal National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment centres in Abuja.

The commission said its Inspectorate Compliance and Enforcement Unit carried out the operation in Gwagwalada and other locations as part of efforts to stop unauthorised enrolment, illegal modification of personal details and extortion of applicants.

In a statement issued by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, NIMC said the operation was aimed at protecting the integrity and security of Nigeria’s National Identity Management System.

“The exercise is part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on unauthorised enrolment, illegal data modification and extortion of applicants,” the commission said.

NIMC Director-General Abisoye Coker-Odusote reaffirmed the commission’s zero tolerance for extortion and unethical practices, saying it remained committed to providing smooth enrolment services for Nigerians and legal residents.

The commission warned that many problems experienced by NIN holders result from using unauthorised operators instead of following official procedures.

It stressed that new NIN enrolments must be carried out only at approved centres, while changes to personal information should be made through its official self-service platform.

NIMC also advised Nigerians to download its NINAuth application, which provides additional security features, including NIN protection and the ability to print NIN slips.

It urged applicants and existing NIN holders to avoid unauthorised centres and use approved channels for all identity management services.

For complaints and enquiries, the commission provided its toll-free number, 0800 0616 462.
