Nine Family Members, Two-Month-Old Baby Killed in Plateau Attack

A fresh attack by gunmen has left nine members of the same family, including a two-month-old baby, dead in the Kum and Wereng-Camp communities of Riyom Local Government Area in Plateau State.

The violence erupted late Saturday night, with residents reporting that the assault began around 11:30 p.m. and lasted for more than an hour.

The community's village head was also critically injured and required emergency medical treatment.

A local resident described the incident as one of the deadliest in the area in recent times, stating that the victims were killed in their home during the coordinated attack.

According to the resident, the gunmen invaded the communities in large numbers, shooting indiscriminately and forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes for safety.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, Rwang Tengwong, confirmed the tragedy to the media.

He explained that the attackers struck under the cover of darkness and targeted helpless residents.

The attack claimed the lives of nine members of one family, including a two-month-old infant, he said, while the village head sustained severe injuries and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

The latest attack comes weeks after several deadly incidents in Plateau, where dozens of people have been killed in separate assaults, raising fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in the North-Central state.

It also comes as the European Parliament has called for an end to the attacks, with possible threats of diplomatic consequences for Nigeria.
