No Reason to Celebrate – Nigerians Demand Action on Kidnappings Ahead of Democracy Day

Angry and heartbroken Nigerian residents are questioning the value of Nigeria's democracy as school children and teachers remain held by kidnappers.

With Democracy Day approaching on 12th June, Nigeria Info 99.3FM took to the streets to speak to citizens.

The street interview revealed deep frustration over the government's failure to protect its citizens.

Multiple victims in Oyo State, including teachers and pupils as young as two years old, have been held in the forest for over three weeks.

A teacher was beheaded and at least one student has died, according to reports.

"The insecurity in Nigeria is rising to an all-time high," one resident said.

"It feels like there is nothing to be celebrating about."

Respondents also pointed out a disturbing double standard in how the government handles security.

They noted that when relatives of a high-profile former minister were targeted, security forces responded within days.

Meanwhile, regular school children are left suffering under harsh weather and trauma.

Others brought up a separate, quiet crisis in Borno State involving more than 40 missing school children.

As elections approach next year, citizens warn that if leadership keeps ignoring the public's pain, people may resort to taking security into their own hands.

Local residents are now calling for massive public protests to force the government to act, arguing that building roads and growing the economy matters little if the people do not survive to see it.
