The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has rescued a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps member who fled into a forest after violence erupted at a polling unit during Saturday's Osun governorship election.
The NSCDC Lagos State Command said the corps member, identified as Abigail Peh from Delta State, was serving as an Assistant Presiding Officer II at Ward 9, Unit 006 in Ajagba, Olaoluwa Local Government Area.
According to the corps, Peh ran into a thick forest in Elewudu, Ajagba, after violence broke out at the polling unit.
NSCDC personnel, working with community leaders, launched a search-and-rescue operation and found her about two hours later.
The corps said Peh had changed out of her election-duty clothing by the time she was found, apparently because of panic and fear of a possible attack by suspected miscreants.
She was also found with her luggage, which she had brought from the Independent National Electoral Commission Registration Area Centre to the polling unit where she was deployed.
The NSCDC said Peh was subsequently handed over to the Supervisory Presiding Officer for Ward 9, Mrs. Ige Oluwabusayo.
The incident occurred as voting was underway across Osun State in the governorship election, which was conducted in all 30 local government areas.
