NYSC Insists on NERD Certificate for Prospective Corps Members

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has reiterated that prospective corps members must comply with the Nigeria Education Repository and Databank (NERD) policy before they can be mobilised for national service.

The directive, popularly described as “No NERD, No NYSC,” makes it compulsory for graduates to obtain NERD clearance and upload required academic records before mobilisation or exemption can be approved.

According to the policy, graduates are expected to upload documents including final-year projects, theses and Senate-approved results to the national academic repository.

The NYSC authorities say the move is aimed at curbing certificate fraud and improving the credibility of Nigeria’s education system.

The Federal Government had earlier directed that “no Nigerian graduate, whether trained locally or abroad, will be mobilised for or exempted from the NYSC without proof of NERD compliance.”

The Nigeria Education Repository and Databank Secretariat also clarified that full enforcement of the policy applies to graduates mobilising from January and February 2026 onward.

The agency said the framework is intended to “strengthen education data management” and ensure authenticity in graduate records.

At a recent sensitisation programme for final-year students at Lagos State University of Education, officials warned students that “without NERD, there is no NYSC.”

NYSC also explained that required documents include a JAMB admission letter, Senate-approved results, approved student projects and a NERD clearance slip before mobilisation can proceed.

The policy forms part of wider education reforms introduced by the Federal Government to improve transparency, centralise academic records and reduce cases of fake certificates in tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
