Obidient Movement Alleges Plot to Block Peter Obi’s 2027 Presidential Bid

The Obidient Movement Worldwide on Saturday accused Nigeria’s ruling party of plotting to stop Peter Obi from contesting the January 2027 presidential election.

In a press statement, the group said the “sinister scheme” has been in motion since the 2023 election, aimed at destabilizing Obi’s former party, the Labour Party, to prevent him from gaining political influence.

The statement noted that Obi “made the difficult decision to exit the party on December 31, 2025” after repeated interference by government-backed actors and courts that ignored a Supreme Court ruling on Labour Party leadership in April 2025.

The Obidient Movement said Obi later joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), bringing renewed energy to the party.

The statement added that the ruling party “escalated its sabotage — pursuing legislative changes that led to a damaging amendment to the Electoral Act, explicitly designed to pressure the ADC and undermine Obi's presidential ambitions.”

The statement also referenced Obi’s recent political moves: his 22nd March visit to former Kano Governor Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, where he was “warmly received by Kwankwasiyya members,” and the ADC’s rally in Kano on 30th March, 2026, which the group said intensified government hostility.

The Obidient Movement condemned the trend as a “blatant scheme to undermine democracy, establish a one-party dictatorship, [and] continue exploiting Nigeria's resources through corruption.”

Dr. Yunusa Tanko, national coordinator, called on “all stakeholders to uphold the values of democracy and ensure Peter Obi has the opportunity to present his vision to the Nigerian electorate.”
