Okpebholo: I Will Resign if Tinubu is Not Reelected

Edo State Governor Sen. Monday Okpebholo has said he will step down from office if President Bola Tinubu does not win the 2027 presidential election, during an interview on television Friday.

The comments were made on African Independent Television (AIT) on 27th February 2026.

Okpebholo said development projects in Edo State have been achieved with support from President Tinubu, and that the people of Edo should vote to show their appreciation.

“Edo people have not even thanked Tinubu. How they will thank him is through their votes,” he said.

“The various projects across the state are the things that will speak for Tinubu, and he will win here. Bet me, if he doesn’t win, I will resign as governor.”

The governor explained that his style of politics is focused on grassroots engagement, not violence.

“There’s no election here for him. I’m a politician who under-studied Chief Aneni. My style of politics is not thuggery but grassroots,” Okpebholo added.

Okpebholo’s statement has drawn attention because it links his job as governor to the success of a national election outcome.

The governor has been vocal in supporting Tinubu and the ruling party’s plans for the 2027 elections in his state, which is seen as politically significant due to its size and voter strength. Okpebholo believes backing the president’s re-election bid will encourage continued development projects in Edo.

The governor’s comments come as political campaigning builds ahead of the 2027 general elections, with parties preparing to select their candidates and mobilise voters nationwide.
