Opposition Leaders Converge on Ibadan for 2027 Strategy Summit

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi were among top political figures who arrived in Ibadan on Saturday for a national summit of opposition leaders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The gathering, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, also drew key stakeholders including former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola, as opposition figures intensify talks on coalition-building.

In a social media post, Atiku, a leading figure in the emerging opposition coalition, shared a video of his arrival, signaling growing momentum around the meeting.

Kwankwaso, Obi, and others also shared images and videos of their arrival to the event which is believed to be a meeting where the opposition maps out their plans to unseat the current administration.

Participants have also described the meeting as a platform for collaboration.

Kwankwaso, in his social media post, said, “Excited to arrive in Ibadan, Oyo State, for the National Summit of Opposition Political Party Leaders.”

He added, “Ready for meaningful engagements with fellow national leaders.”

Organisers say that the summit is expected to focus on political realignments and preparations for the next general elections, and claimed that it comes amid efforts by opposition groups to present a united front capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress in 2027.

Discussions are expected to center on national issues, electoral strategy and alliance-building.

There were also claims of attempts to disrupt the meeting.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the spokesperson of the African Democratic Congress coalition party, alleged that efforts had been made to frustrate the summit after difficulties securing venues in Abuja, raising concerns about political tensions ahead of the polls.

The Ibadan meeting marks one of the most significant assemblies of opposition leaders in recent months, underscoring early manoeuvring as Nigeria moves toward the 2027 elections.
