Nigeria’s opposition parties are set to meet in Abuja on the 31st of August as part of efforts to form a common political front against President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 election.
The summit is being organised by the G100 political movement and will bring together leaders of six opposition parties, including the African Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Social Democratic Party, Action Peoples Movement, Peoples Redemption Party and New Nigeria People’s Party.
G100 convener Salihu Lukman said the group had held consultations with party leaders, presidential candidates, running mates and national chairmen, with the responses described as encouraging.
“Our concern is simple.
"As opposition parties, we seem fragmented, and if we continue on this path, we are almost going to repeat the 2023 scenario,” Lukman said.
He said the summit would focus on creating a framework for cooperation rather than immediately deciding who would lead a joint presidential ticket.
“The first question before party leaders is not who leads the ticket.
"It is what we are, together, prepared to do for this country,” Lukman said.
The summit was initially scheduled for the 18th of August but was moved to its new date to allow for wider consultations and avoid a clash with a national peace accord.
House Minority Leader Fred Agbedi has backed the effort, saying, “Strength is in unity,” while urging opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions.
The APC has dismissed the proposed alliance, saying it will fail and expressing confidence that Nigerians will renew Tinubu’s mandate in 2027.
