PDP Aims to Rebuild After Wave of Defections

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) says it will rebuild from the ground up after several governors and other leaders left the party for rivals.

The party’s national publicity secretary, Ini Ememobong, said this in an interview with Arise News.

The official blamed both outside pressure and internal problems for the defections.

He said some governors left because they wanted to “connect to the centre” to bring projects and money home.

He added that this approach is wrong for a fair federal system and hurts democracy.

The PDP spokesman said the party tried patience after the 2023 elections but now must act.

Ememobong also said the party will focus on listening to ordinary members and fixing state-level problems.

“The voice of the people must always be heard,” he said.

Asked why the party did not punish members who worked against it, Ememobong said leaders tried to heal wounds first, but admitted some decisions should have been taken earlier.

He said the party is now calling state chairmen and local leaders to check the situation and rebuild trust.

The spokesman urged any former members who want to stay to either work within the PDP or form their own party.

He said the main goal now is to make the PDP a strong, united opposition for the 2027 elections.
