The Peoples Democratic Party Board of Trustees has announced that it is taking over the leadership of the party after a Supreme Court judgment deepened the PDP’s long-running leadership crisis.
The decision was announced by former Senate President Adolphus Wabara, who leads the party’s Board of Trustees, or BoT.
The crisis followed a Supreme Court ruling that voided the PDP convention held in Ibadan in November 2025, where a faction led by Kabiru Turaki emerged.
The court ruled in a split 3-2 decision that the convention was held in violation of existing court orders.
Justice Chioma Nwosu-Iheme said, “Parties must obey court orders whether they favour them or not.”
She added that the convention was “a product of the disobedience of the court” and declared it “condemned and nullified.”
Reacting to the judgment, Wabara said, “The Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party assumes leadership of our great party today.”
He explained that the move was meant “to ensure that there is no leadership vacuum at the national level of our party.”
Wabara also announced plans for an emergency National Executive Committee meeting to appoint an interim National Working Committee ahead of the 2027 elections.
The PDP has faced repeated internal crises since losing power to the ruling APC in 2015, with disagreements over leadership and party structure worsening after the 2023 general elections.
