Plateau Islamic Cleric Opposes State Police Plan

A prominent Islamic cleric in Plateau State has spoken out against the federal government’s proposed plan to create state police, saying it could harm peace and unity in the region.

Sheikh Sani Yahaya Jingir, a well-known Islamic scholar and religious leader based in Plateau, has vehemently condemned plans by the federal government to give states power to establish their own police forces.

Jingir, who is the National Chairman of the Ulama Council of Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa’Ikamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS), said on Sundaythat such a move could be misused in politically tense places like Plateau.

Jingir warned that state-controlled security outfits might be used “against perceived political opponents” in a community already struggling with conflict and insecurity.

He said the current proposal could worsen tensions instead of helping local people feel safer.

Supporters of the state police idea argue that it could help states respond more quickly to crime and violence without waiting for federal police.

But Jingir said the timing and conditions are important, and such a change should be handled carefully to avoid giving any group too much power.

Plateau has seen ongoing clashes and insecurity in recent years, and some residents have called for stronger local security forces.

However, Jingir’s position highlights differing opinions on how best to protect communities and ensure justice without stirring more conflict.

He urged government leaders to focus first on peace-building, dialogue and fairness so that any changes to policing will benefit everyone in the state.
