Pope Leo XIV to Visit Four African Countries in April

Pope Leo XIV has announced a major foreign trip to four African nations this year, the Vatican said on Wednesday.

It will be part of his first big overseas travel plan for 2026.

The pope, who leads the Catholic Church, will visit Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea between 13th and 23rd April.

The visits are part of an 11-day Apostolic Journey that will take him to key cities in each country.

The trip was announced by the Holy See Press Office, which said Pope Leo will begin in Algeria, then travel to Cameroon, followed by Angola, and finally Equatorial Guinea.

The Vatican said the visits respond to invitations from governments and Church leaders in the four countries.

A full schedule will be released later.

This African tour will be part of a busy travel year for the Pope.

Pope Leo has travelled abroad only once before since his election in May 2025, when he visited Türkiye and Lebanon late last year.

Catholic leaders say the African trip highlights the importance of the Church on the continent, where a large number of the world’s Catholics live.
