President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Nigerians to use the rare simultaneous start of the Christian Lenten season and the Muslim holy month of Ramadan to promote peace, unity and good neighbourliness, the State House said in a statement.
In his message on Wednesday, Tinubu said it was uncommon for both seasons to begin on the same day, and that the timing reflects shared values among Christians and Muslims.
“This year, Lent and Ramadan begin on the same day. This is not a common occurrence, and it reminds us that as a people of faith, we share a lot in common and are one people under God,” he said.
The President described Lent as “a time for fasting, abstinence, and penitence, following Jesus Christ’s example in the wilderness” and Ramadan as “a hallowed season that reflects total submission to God Almighty and His command of sacrifice, devotion, service, and communal love and giving.”
Tinubu asked Nigerians to support one another and pray for the nation’s well-being.
“As a nation and as a people, I urge us, as we embark on these important observances, to ensure good neighbourliness, promote peace, unity, and stability, and pray for the progress and security of our nation,” he said, adding that the lessons and blessings of both seasons should “abide with us always.”
The dual observance comes at a time when the country is facing challenges including economic pressures, insecurity and calls for national cohesion, and leaders across faiths have joined calls for compassion and unity.
First Lady Oluremi Tinubu also released messages urging Nigerians to pray for peace and prosperity, saying the season is a time for spiritual growth and deeper faith.
“May our prayers and acts of compassion and kindness deepen our faith,” she said.
