President Tinubu Highlights Security Gains, Economic Reforms in Democracy Day Address

President Bola Tinubu on Friday used his 2026 Democracy Day address to highlight his administration’s security efforts, economic reforms and power sector plans, while also paying tribute to pro-democracy activists who fought for the return of civilian rule in Nigeria.

Security Remains Top Priority

Tinubu said his government has continued to confront terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security threats across the country.

He praised members of the armed forces and security agencies for their sacrifices and assured Nigerians that efforts to restore peace would continue.

According to the president, security operations have helped reclaim communities, protect lives and improve conditions for economic activities in many parts of the country.

He said the government would remain committed to ensuring that Nigerians can live and work without fear.

“The safety of our people remains our foremost responsibility,” Tinubu said, adding that security agencies would continue to receive support needed to carry out their duties.

Economy Showing Signs of Recovery

The president also defended his economic reforms, saying difficult decisions taken since he assumed office were beginning to produce results.

Tinubu said the reforms were aimed at building a stronger economy, attracting investment and creating jobs for Nigerians.

He noted that the government remained focused on reducing inflation, strengthening public finances and supporting businesses.

“We chose reform over retreat,” the president said, arguing that the measures were necessary to secure Nigeria’s long-term economic future.

He added that the administration would continue to pursue policies that promote growth and opportunity.

The president said the government was working to ensure that the benefits of economic recovery reach ordinary Nigerians through social programmes, infrastructure projects and expanded opportunities for young people.

Focus on Power Supply

On electricity, Tinubu said improving power generation, transmission and distribution remains a major priority of his administration.

He said reliable electricity is critical to industrial growth, job creation and improved living standards.

The government, he added, is pursuing reforms and investments designed to deliver more stable power to homes and businesses across the country.

Honouring Democracy Heroes

The president concluded by recognising individuals who played key roles in Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle, particularly those connected to the June 12 movement.

He praised the courage of activists, journalists, labour leaders, politicians and ordinary citizens who resisted military rule and fought for democratic governance.

Tinubu also announced national honours for 50 pro-democracy figures and acknowledged the sacrifices made by many Nigerians during the struggle.

“Let us remember those who bled so we could vote.

“Those who took risks so we could speak,” the president said as he called on Nigerians to protect and strengthen the country’s democratic institutions for future generations.
