The Minister-Designate for Power and the Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, Joseph Tegbe, has denied reports claiming he promised to fix Nigeria’s electricity grid within three months.
Nigeria has continued to struggle with frequent grid collapses, poor power supply and outdated infrastructure, despite repeated reforms in the sector.
Tegbe's alleged comments came as a relief to some, and a point to many looking to hold the Minister-Designate accountable.
Tegbe made the clarification after comments linked to him circulated online following a recent interview on the country’s power challenges.
According to him, however, his remarks were misunderstood.
“I never promised to fix the national grid in three months,” he said, explaining that he only spoke about efforts to improve collaboration and investment in the power sector.
He said his comments were taken out of context and stressed that solving Nigeria’s electricity problems requires long-term planning and cooperation from different stakeholders.
Tegbe explained that what he discussed was the possibility of beginning strategic interventions within a short period, not completely repairing the power system.
“What I said was that significant steps could begin within that time if the right support and partnerships are in place,” he stated.
He added that Nigeria’s electricity challenges have built up over many years and cannot be solved overnight.
The official also pointed to ongoing discussions with Chinese investors and technical partners aimed at improving energy infrastructure across the country.
He said the focus is on increasing generation, strengthening transmission and expanding access to stable electricity.
Tegbe urged Nigerians to avoid misinformation and rely on verified statements, noting that public expectations should be based on realistic timelines and practical solutions.
