Tinubu Extends Tenures of Immigration, Correctional Service Chiefs by 18 Months

President Bola Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).

The extension means Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, Controller-General of the Correctional Service, will remain in office until May 26, 2028, while Kemi Nanna Nandap, Comptroller-General of the Immigration Service, will serve until June 30, 2028.

The presidency announced the decision Monday in a statement by Bayo Onanuga, the president’s special adviser on information and strategy.

According to the statement, the approval followed a recommendation by Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.

It said the extension would address a “succession gap” in both services and give their boards enough time to appoint successors.

Tinubu also commended the two service chiefs for the reforms recorded under their leadership.

The statement said the president “charged them to consolidate these gains.”

Nwakuche was nominated as controller-general of the Correctional Service in December 2024, and the Senate confirmed his appointment in March 2025.

Nandap was nominated to lead the Immigration Service on Feb. 21, 2024.

The Senate confirmed her appointment on March 1, 2024.

The extension comes as both agencies continue their responsibilities in national security and public administration.

The Immigration Service is responsible for managing Nigeria’s borders, issuing passports and enforcing immigration laws, while the Correctional Service oversees correctional facilities and the custody and rehabilitation of inmates.

The presidency said the extensions would give both agencies time to arrange leadership succession.
