President Bola Tinubu has extended his working vacation by a few days and will return to Nigeria at the weekend.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency said Tinubu left Nigeria on August 30 for London, where he began the working vacation, before moving to Paris, France, after a week.
In Paris, the president met with French President Emmanuel Macron and businessman Vincent Bollore, whose business interests include Canal+, Multichoice and Universal Music Group.
The Presidency said Tinubu has remained in contact with officials at home and continued to direct the affairs of government while away.
It cited his order for an independent panel to investigate the deaths of 37 illegal miners in Minna following their detention by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps as one of the decisions taken during his absence.
Tinubu has also delegated Vice President Kashim Shettima and Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, to represent him at official engagements.
Shettima travelled to New York to represent Tinubu at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, where he is expected to deliver Nigeria’s national statement.
The Presidency dismissed suggestions by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and a United States-based lobbying firm over Tinubu’s decision not to attend the General Assembly, describing the insinuations as irresponsible.
It said Akume, who has also been representing the president at official functions, would continue to do so while Tinubu remains away.
On the political front, the statement said Director-General of the Presidential Campaign Council, Senator Abubakar Yari, has been leading consultations with prominent traditional rulers across the country.
